"We're working really, really hard every single day to make sure that people are authentic," Match Group CEO Bernard Kim told CBS News. Her daughter, Kelly Gowe, said she believes scammers, including the person using the pseudonym "Frank Borg," drove her mother to a point of feeling "like she was endangered. That she was going to die." "These are sophisticated fraudsters who are preying on the human desire for affection. For connection with another person. And they are manipulating [victims] … using sophisticated technology." "She had all these buckets full in her life, my mom did," said Kelly Gowe, Laura's daughter. "But there was this one bucket that was missing… and that was companionship. ... And that's ultimately where we're at now, is because of that." Jerry and Carolyn Ellis, along with their daughters Cindy and Teresa, purchased The Catfish House in Clarksville in the late 1970's.

Parker was juglining with her dad, Chuck, and family friend Jeff Sams on a tributary of the Ohio River behind Sams’ house. It was Parker’s turn to check the lines, and when she did, she discovered that a blue cat weighing almost as much as her was on the other end, her tells the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It wasn't until I learned that I was going to have a daughter of my own that I knew that, one day, she would know the full story of how her grandmother passed away," Gowe said.

And, through her story, the reports will re-examine a problem many in law enforcement now believe has been grossly underestimated. "We can't do that to the victims of these frauds and scams either. These are professionals, they do it every single day. They're good at it." The OWO did not immediately reply to a request for comment on Parker’s pending record fish.

More debate sprung up over whether a fish caught on a jugline should be recognized alongside Ohio’s rod-and-reel records. As OWO member Chip Hart wrote in the organization’s Facebook page, the Committee recognizes a separate bowfishing category, and discussion of a separate jug and trotline category will come up at the OWO conference this month. Last year, Gowe left her job with a farm supply company and has dedicated herself to sharing her mother's story as a cautionary tale. At a speech to a women's group in Iowa earlier this year, she urged financial institutions and law enforcement to do more to protect victims. A year-long CBS News investigation has found a growing number of federal agents, local police and online security experts believe the law enforcement response has, to date, failed to address the problem.

While several local detectives who investigated the final days and hours of her life appear persuaded that she died by suicide, they have stopped short of that formal finding. Her autopsy report, prepared in the days after her body was discovered in August 2020 floating in the river by a couple out fishing, says only that she died by "drowning." All dinners are served with one serving of white beans, hush puppies, cole slaw, and your choice of side.

All dinners are served with one serving of white beans, hush puppies, coleslaw, and your choice of side. The current Ohio blue catfish record is 96 pounds and 54 ½ inches in length. Chris Rolph of Williamsburg caught the fish on the Ohio River on June 11, 2009. The catch raised a bit of a firestorm on social media over Ohio’s juglining rules and how the record system mixes float-line records with rod-and-reel records.

On April 7, 15-year-old Jaylynn Parker of New Richmond, Ohio pulled in a 101-pound, 56-inch blue catfish on a jugline from a creek behind a family friend’s house. The Outdoor Writers of Ohio, a non-governmental organization of outdoor media professionals that maintains the state’s fish record database, is currently deciding whether to name the fish as the formal state record. Katie Hill is a staff writer for Outdoor Life where she covers outdoor news, hunting, and conservation in the West. She was born and raised on the East Coast but relocated to Missoula, Montana, in 2019 to earn her master’s degree in environmental journalism. OWO vice president Jeffrey Frischkorn chimed in on Facebook, calling the catch legal.

The family then successfully released the fish, Parker’s mom Kristen wrote in a Facebook post. Once it wriggled back into the murky depths, Parker and Sams leapt into the water in celebration. Over the course of this week, CBS News will tell Laura Kowal's story.

Under the same state regulations, banklines must be checked once every 24 hours. The anglers also attached identification to the jugs in keeping with state law. “We’ll see what the OWO committee decides, but with any luck, we’re celebrating a new blue catfish record,” he says.

In 2012, The Catfish House relocated from its original location on Salem Road in order to be able to serve more of our wonderful customers. Nev and his family are usually based in Brooklyn, New York, but Nev and Laura’s recent Instagram posts make it seem as though they’ve been quarantined outside of the city for socially distant family time by lakes and beaches. Sandwiches are served with coleslaw and french fries or beans. Game wardens checked all their gear and confirmed that the jugs were marked with their names and addresses. But Hale says that the OWO’s Record Fish Committee is still determining whether this fish will count or not. Match Group, the largest company in the online dating space, has tried to keep pace, telling CBS News it is now swatting down 44 spam profiles per minute.

Planning the layout of your Tableau dashboard involves sketching a rough layout, considering the size and orientation, and deciding on the elements to include. In the worksheet below, packed bubbles are used to display sales by product. It is really hard to accurately compare the sales of the different products. Spotlighting is a good example of how to emphasize what is important without overwhelming your users with color. With spotlighting only numbers that meet a defined threshold are highlighted.

The best visualizations have a clear purpose and work for their intended audience. It’s important to know what you are trying to say and who you are saying it to. Does your audience know this subject matter extremely well or will it be new to them?

Designing for Performance

It’s important to make any interactivity obvious to your audience—even by creating subtitles to instruct them to click or hover for more information. Users can also interact with your visualizations by selecting marks and hovering to see tooltips. The actions you set up can respond with navigation and changes in the view.

Also, because we have the map in view, we probably don't need the South region column in Sales in the South, either. Too many views can also interfere with the performance of your dashboard after it's published. A well-designed dashboard can align your organization's efforts, help uncover key insights, and speed up decision-making. Use this topic for tips on best practices for creating effective dashboards in Tableau. This visualization tool gives visibility to the availability of products in the form of excesses or out of stock measures. In doing so, it helps you save a ton of money, since excessive products will eventually lead to spilled costs, while lack of availability indicates lost sales potential.

This means that if you design a dashboard at 1300 x 700 pixels, Tableau will resize it for smaller displays—and sometimes this results in scrunched views or scrollbars. If you keep this setting, be sure to construct your visualization at the size which it will be viewed. You can also set Size to Automatic, so Tableau automatically adapts the overall dimensions of a visualization based on screen size. The Tableau Dashboard that you will now learn to create will include the COVID-19 data related to India. It will need multiple worksheets, and the visualizations generated, will be combined to create a Tableau Dashboard to present the viewers with detailed insights on one screen.

When building business dashboards, we will let brand colors guide us but that doesn’t mean that we’ll use the entire color palette on a dashboard. Choose one or two colors to do most of the work and then use neutral colors such as black, gray, and white where needed. To do this, you can use dashboards to display multiple worksheets at once, and—if you want—make them interact with one another. You can also display a highlighter that allows your customers to highlight parts of a view based on what they enter or select. In addition to knowing what you're trying to say, it's important to know who you're saying it to.

We’ll dive into the 15 best Tableau dashboard examples that deliver real, actionable insights. The phrase coined by Henrick Ibsen “A picture is worth a thousand words”, is a great reminder of the power of data visualizations in telling a story with data. To effectively use data to tell a story we need to make sure our dashboards support, not hinder our storytelling. Make use of filters to allow viewer interaction, add tooltips for more information, and utilize actions to link different elements together for seamless exploration of data.

Most house centipedes are yellowish-gray and have stripes down the length of their body and across their legs, too. While house centipedes can inflict a bite, it is of minor consequence and it rarely does so. When given the chance, house centipedes prefer to quickly retreat from danger rather than bite. You’re most likely to find a house centipede in a dark corner in the basement, although it will wander anywhere it finds moisture.

Millipedes have two pairs of legs per body segment and eat mostly decaying organic matter – roots of plants and leaves. They also like dark moist areas both inside and outside of the home. House centipedes are active hunters, since they don’t build webs or traps. Although this very agile and fast moving, longlegged critter has an unnerving appearance as it darts over walls and floors, it should be considered harmless and no cause for alarm.

Are California millipedes poisonous?

Though many people use humidifiers in winter for health reasons, this should not conflict too much with prevention measures, as house centipedes are not generally as active in the winter. Using a dehumidifier in warmer months may make a difference in the number of house centipedes in your home. It is especially important to repair plumbing leaks and keep basement and attic spaces dry.

Food

Not only are house centipedes killing the bugs you really don’t want in your house, they also don’t create any nests or webs. They are considered active hunters and are constantly looking for their next prey. Centipedes aren’t eating your wood or carrying a fatal disease. Forcipules are located just behind the centipede’s head and function as venomous appendages used to capture and immobilize prey.

How to Prevent House Centipedes From Coming Back

It’s a common instinct to kill an insect with this many legs as quickly as possible. The common name of Scolopendra heros is something of a misnomer, because it doesn’t just live in the desert. It has been sighted in Arkansas, southern Missouri, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

Video: These Mistakes Make Your Home Attractive to Bugs

This critter is a common household pest, seeking out a moist environment and solid food source in the comforts of your home. While not overly dangerous to people, a centipede might not be a welcomed guest. Although you may not like the sight of house centipedes, they can be helpful in controlling more concerning pests. Getting rid of other pests from your house will go a long way toward reducing the number of house centipedes you see. While house centipedes themselves do not pose health risks, their presence indicates that there are other pests around.

Clear any leaf litter or wood debris from around the perimeter of your home, especially if it’s damp. A combination of all of these measures is likely to reduce any centipede population you have. The house centipede (Scutigera coleoptrata) is the most common centipede found in the U.S. These centipedes are sometimes referred to as “hundred-leggers,” due to their many pairs of legs. Their bodies are divided into 15 segments, each with a pair of long legs. Other species of centipedes have more legs, but they always have an odd number of pairs of legs.

Most centipedes and millipedes are not poisonous and do not cause damage to homes. In fact infestations of these pests are usually due to the presence of other insects that they like to feed on. Both of these pests also like dark moist areas – outside they can be found in moist areas in the yard – the underside of stones, leaves and barks of trees. When inside your home the areas centipedes and millipedes are most likely to hide are bathrooms, kitchens, garages and basements. As carnivores, centipedes are predators, and they may actually serve a beneficial purpose in or around your home in terms of pest control. For example, house centipedes may eat roaches, flies, silverfish, and even termites.

PEST LIBRARY

Indoors, Centipedes will stay under shelves, boxes, or other items. If centipedes can find these within an unused room in your house it’s even better. They may be hiding within piles of wood, or under construction equipment that has been left out for a while. Since Centipedes are nocturnal, meaning they are active during the night, centipedes want to be well out of the way and hidden from other animals or humans during the day.

Despite their painful bites, most centipede species in the area aren’t considered habitual home invaders. That being stated, it’s not uncommon for pest management professionals to get calls from residents who find centipedes more than 6 inches inside their home. Oftentimes, houseplants lure centipedes inside, as houseplants attract insect prey and therefore are located within high-moisture regions of a house which are hospitable towards the creatures. – As their name suggests, house centipedes are very common pests that often make themselves at home inside our homes. The house centipede’s name means “one hundred legs” but, depending on the exact species, they can have between 15 and 177 legs.

Although, given their large size, they’re sufficiently strong to cause an unpleasant bite. Although harmless, centipedes can be a nuisance in your basement or bathrooms. Schedule an appointment with an Orkin expert to remove centipedes in your home. We've removed thousands of pests from many homes & businesses across Las Vegas. There are only a few reports of this animal biting people, usually when handled or stepped on with bare feet. If bitten, the wound should be cleaned and antiseptic applied to prevent secondary infection and ice applied to reduce swelling.

There’s Someone Inside Your House is intermittently effective, but ultimately unremarkable, and it feels like a product of its time in disappointing ways. Throughout "There's Someone Inside Your House," Makani is tortured by her own dark past that seems to haunt her everyday life. In the last half of the film, Makani is almost killed by the masked intruder, but she's thankfully rescued when her friend Alex Crisp (Asjha Cooper) stops by her home.

Case closed: Dead Boy Detectives is a hell of a good time

That game, its audience, and the movie all stop dead in their tracks when everybody receives a mysterious text message with a video clip of Jackson and his buddies’ crime. Jackson’s transgression is somehow not the main focus of the movie, though openly gay quarterback Caleb (Burkely Duffield) does score a touchdown while everyone else looks at their phones. The graduating class at Osborne High is being targeted by a masked assailant, intent on exposing the darkest secret of each victim, and only a group of misfit outsiders can stop the killings...

horror

Let's dive deeper into the There's Someone Inside Your House ending. Makani also confesses to her friends that she pushed a girl into a bonfire during a hazing event at her old school, and was charged with assault. As it turns out, Makani’s friend Rodrigo (Diego Josef) is next to die, after his drug dependency habit is exposed.

What Was With The Masks?

Yeah, in general, it’s always really heavy when you’re carrying shame and guilt in your personal life, so having to portray that in a character who I came to really adore and admire was challenging. She’s a departure from me as a person, but she’s also a departure from any of the roles I’ve ever done in my career. So I created a playlist for her and listened to that the whole duration of filming. I did my research, obviously, with the book, but I even created my own backstory and moments. ” So it was really fun, but towards the end of filming, it was definitely hard to let her go because she is such an internal character.

Letterboxd — Your life in film

So we pay homage to the John Hughes Breakfast Club types of movies, while keeping the integrity of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. The next day at school, friends Makani, Alex, Zach, Darby, and Rodrigo let Caleb sit with them at lunch after he is shunned by the rest of the school. The school's student council president, Katie, announces that there will be a memorial at a church. At the church, while Katie is setting up, someone begins playing a racist and homophobic podcast that she recorded.

As soon as it starts to lay down tracks, and head in a certain direction, it derails and scraps the story for something drastically different or confusingly contradictory. In the end, despite the title, it's just a masked someone killing teenagers for reasons and those reasons are terribly dumb. Yes, there's a certain formula that has, and still can, work for the teen slasher genre. Quickly though, that blueprint is ditched in favor of a story where anyone, including our heroes, who by all plot armor accounts can't secretly be bigots or homophobes, are in danger. But then...it just becomes a story about someone killing any teenager in town for any reason. There's Someone Inside Your House is a wholly crummy affair with no teeth, no point, and no heart.

Makani finds herself left alone in the school building, after the rest of the school leaves for a field trip to the Sanford family corn maze, and Makani misses the bus. When she sees Ollie’s car pull up, she flees and runs into her friend Caleb in the hallway. Before she can fill him in, Caleb is stabbed with a sword by the killer. At the same time, Ollie is running into the building, yelling Makani’s name to warn her—meaning the killer is not Ollie. That's right, the gimmick isn't even the gimmick. Also, the unspoken rule that the first two kills establish -- that the local bogeyman is going after people who are secretly bad people -- gets entirely demolished by the third kill when the target is a decent person.

Still, the most frustrating thing about “There’s Someone Inside Your House” has to be the gulf between its characters’ stated qualities and their actual behavior. Chipper and cruel student council leader Katie (Sarah Dugdale) gets stalked and dispatched in an early kill scene set in a church, which suggests that the filmmakers are more interested in plot twists than character development. And honestly, Katie’s not much more of a character than, say, Makani, whose main appeal stems from her barely considered past. In the fictional town of Osborne, Nebraska, high school football player Jackson Pace awakens from a nap to find his house covered in photographs taken on the night he beat up a gay classmate, Caleb, as part of a haze.

Zach explains in his little villain monologue that his intention was to teach his father (who is also a Nazi?) a lesson. Zach stabs Ollie and explains that he’s not a sociopath, and doesn’t want to feel ashamed just because he was born to privilege. Then he also talks a bit about how everyone is wearing fake faces, hence the whole mask thing. Oh, and also, he is going to frame Makani for everything, which is why he handed her the sword earlier. (Honestly, there are a lot of threads floating around here, and none of them really connect.) Then Ollie tases Zach, and Makani stabs him, and it’s over.

Set in a rural Nebraska town, the film kicks off with a high school football star being killed in his own home (so the title holds, at first). With the town reeling, the next then kill solidifies the fact that the murderer is going after people with dark secrets. Specifically, secrets about the victims being purposefully awful people.

She is confronted by the killer, who is wearing a mask of her face, and stabbed in the confessional while attempting to call 911. The next night, Zach hosts a party while his family is out of town where everyone must share their secrets. The partygoers get high, while Rodrigo takes fentanyl, which is his real secret.

Next on the killer’s list is the student-body president, who’s likewise presented with proof of her misdeeds in the lead-up to her violent end. A pattern thus established, the question naturally becomes which of their classmates is taking the idea of cancel culture a little too literally — and whether they’re aware of the incident that resulted in Makani’s abrupt move. I absolutely adored Santa Clarita Diet before I got the audition, and then when I did, I was like, “Holy fuck, this is amazing.” And everybody was so cool. We did film in Santa Clarita, and we actually had hour lunches.

It’s a crazy birth story because I swallowed my mother’s umbilical cord. So when I was born through a C-section, I was not crying and I was actually dead. So they had to smack my back and get all of the stuff out of me… There’s more to the birth story, but Halloween is the day.

Admittedly, There's Someone Inside Your House is a good title for a film looking to play around with tropes and get a bit winky and clever with set pieces. But what we get is a flat, muddled mess that fails because it just wants to have everything. It wants to have someone run through a house, but also a church.

Rodrigo finds a trail of pills leading to his bottle before everyone gets text messages about his addiction. As the lights go out, prompting everyone to run away, Rodrigo is pursued by the killer wearing a mask of his face, who ultimately forces him to choke on his fentanyl pills before fatally slashing his throat. As the countdown to graduation begins, students at Osborne High are being stalked by a maniac intent on exposing their darkest secrets to the entire town, terrorizing victims while wearing a life-like mask of their own face. With a mysterious past of her own, Makani and her friends must discover the killer's identity before they become victims themselves. Halloween has always been a special day for Sydney Park, but this year’s celebration was extra meaningful.

I’m also currently loving plaster lighting, such as Paul Ferrante’s white or gold leaf shell light, as it adds the perfect touch of casual elegance,” says Reynolds. Layering lighting with different fixtures, such as table lamps, sconces, and chandeliers, can add depth and interest to any Palm Beach space. Textured wallpapers and those with prints that include images of palms, florals, and stripes are all reflective of Palm Beach style. “Grass cloth and burlap soften up a room and provide textural layers without overwhelming the overall design,” says Walsh.

Not to mention, Ollie's older brother was a police officer, which his classmates thought gave him easier access to their background information (i.e. their secrets). Nobody knew about Makani's relationship with Ollie, and even though she tried to brush off her friends' warnings, she got spooked when Ollie revealed that he knew her real name was Makani Sun-Woo. Ollie also carried a Taser, which was part of the killer's M.O.

Zach says he hates his dad too and laughs along with the jokes everyone makes. But maybe what didn’t kill her made her strong enough to not get killed by the killer. “I have watched a lot of true crime,” sniffs student council president Katie Koons (Sarah Dugdale) when the murders start happening, and that statement applies to There’s Someone Inside Your House on a grander scale. This is a film crafted by people who are aware of the genre’s tropes, but unaware of how to put a unique spin on them. The result is that the film never fully transcends the level of “put on in the background while decorating for Halloween” movie.

What Was With The Masks?

Hopefully, we'll continue to see experimental takes on the slasher genre, and have more great titles like "There's Someone Inside Your House" to enjoy in the future. (Laughs.) I always get these kismet connections to my characters in some way. It’s really dope, and I’m just grateful for all of the experiences.

” the doomed quarterback asks moments before his demise, “because I can Venmo you, like, right now.” It’s a funny line, as are many others here, but in trying to be humorous and horrifying at the same time the film is sometimes neither. No one seems to catch the longing eyes Makani and Ollie are making at each other, because Makani’s friends are too busy doing what teenagers in all horror movies do. They hook up, they party, they miss the killer in their midst, and then they start dying. So it goes in There’s Someone Inside Your House, same as it ever was. A year after the move, as Makani adjusts to her new school and makes friends, some of her fellow classmates are found brutally murdered by a killer who wears a mask identical to each victim's own face.

There's Someone Inside Your House is a teen slasher flick that hit Netflix just in time for blood-thirsty Halloween viewers. But when students start getting murdered, exposing the teens' darkest secrets, the whole town of Osborne is on edge. The Walking Dead's Sydney Park stars as Makani, a girl who's recently moved to town, escaping a recent, tragic event who, like everyone else, becomes the target of this masked assailant because... Again though, Makani, and her band of outcast friends, are apparently just as vulnerable as the killer's first two victims, who are a nasty prejudiced people. And all the while the film plays the Red Herring shell game to the point where the killer really can't be anyone except the one person that doesn't make any damn sense. At the end of the film, Makani, Ollie, and their friends head to the school's fall festival to try to thwart the killer, who they realize is going to strike there next.

Zach stabbed Ollie and then told Makani how he was going to frame her for the murders. An injured Ollie got the taser to work, and while he missed Zach, it was enough of a distraction that Makani was able to overtake Zach, and she stabbed him. She said blaming others because he was born privileged made no damn sense and she didn't need a mask to show him who he really was. Then she drove the blade into his body, killing him. The opening credits showed the unseen killer scanning yearbook photos of his classmates and using the images to create 3D masks of his would-be victims' faces. Zach then wore the masks when taking out his classmates, making it appear like they were their own murderer.

WHAT IS THE THERE’S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE ENDING EXPLAINED?

(Laughs.) It was the scariest day of my mom’s life, as she always likes to remind me. There's Someone Inside Your House is streaming now on Netflix. Once you're done with that, here are some more 2021 Netflix movies for you to check out, as well as these 2021 new movie releases.

It’s psychological and it’s really dark in its tone. But then it’s got these woven scenes of love and insecurities of being a teenager. And then of course, the fun element of a teen slasher film.

Lifestyle

She was such a beacon of light on set and such a presence. She was just really, really cool and very casual and fun. I wish I had more opportunities to work with her, but we would interact walking around on set. There's Someone Inside Your House is a 2021 American slasher film directed by Patrick Brice and adapted by Henry Gayden. It is an adaptation of the 2017 novel of the same name by Stephanie Perkins and stars Sydney Park, Théodore Pellerin, Asjha Cooper, Jesse LaTourette, and Diego Josef. The plot follows Makani Young (Park), a senior transfer student from Hawaii who finds herself in the center of gruesome murder cases in her newly acquainted town of Osborne, Nebraska.

Eventually, these standard evasive maneuvers start to feel like the point of this story instead of the usual means to a familiar end. A second victim, student council president Katie, was found to not be the holier-than-thou citizen she claimed when the killer uprooted a white supremacist podcast Katie had anonymously recorded, and then strung her body above the church's altar. This put every Osborne High student with a secret at risk, particularly Makani, who moved to Nebraska to escape her own scandal and was constantly worried that the killer had unearthed her true identity. The killer then alerted the entire town to Jackson's secret — that he bullied his teammate Carter, who was gay. The killer, wearing a mask of Caleb’s face, presses the sword into Makani’s hands.

When will someone dare to be as inventive or as gruesome as this genre requires? There’s Someone Inside Your House will keep people waiting. These components all feel perfunctory, like Brice and Gayden checking boxes off a list of what they think Gen-Z teenagers will respond to.

He told Makani he did it because everyone wore a mask, and in their final moments, Zach wanted his victims to face their true identities. As cool as the masks looked, even Zach admitted to his friends what a laborious task it was to make them all. This 1980s-inspired slasher movie might not break any new ground, but it’s less fixated on the past than other horror films of late. There's Someone Inside Your House tries to make you think it's got a catchy, viable gimmick when in reality it's empty and unsatisfying.

They talk a lot about hiding their true selves from each other, but often don’t seem human enough to be credibly shallow. According to Makani, she was a cheerleader at her old school, and the younger girls were forced to attend a bonfire and drink until they were on the verge of blacking out. At one point, one of the other cheerleaders named Jasmine (Tally Rodin) pushed Makani drunkenly, and an equally-inebriated Makani pushed back — only Jasmine accidentally fell into the fire and was severely burned.

It's also wildly inconsistent with its gimmick, messaging, and tone, wanting to be a Scream-style meta mystery, a Heathers-style high school satire, and a dramatic redemption story all at once. It's so algorithmically thrown together that even the titular premise/promise -- of someone being in someone's house -- doesn't even hold for more than one kill. In "There's Someone Inside Your House," it appears that everyone has deep, dark secrets, including those who you'd least expect. Thankfully, Makani's friends reassure her that her mistake doesn't define her as a person, and we see a glimmer of hope for redemption in Makani's future. So I understood the rhythm, and Santa Clarita Diet was this single-camera show that was written like a sitcom.

So who was the serial killer bent on revealing the Osborne students' biggest secrets? Zach Sandford, one of Makani's friends and son of the businessman who was bankrupting the town, was revealed to be the murderer in a surprising and amusing twist. When Makani and Ollie ran into the burning corn fields to find Zach and save their friend, they witnessed Mr. Sandford being stabbed through the face. The killer then realized he forgot to give Sandford his big speech before killing him, and Zach took off his mask in frustration, revealing to his friends that he was the killer.

An automatic caliber unique to CIGA Design fully rotates the globe on the watch once every 12 hours, so that the compass points to the correct hour on the outermost ring. This is the minute ring, and its rotation has been engineered so that the point on the globe always points to the correct minute. This setup causes the experience of initially setting the watch to be mildly disorienting in the best way. Once the Blue Planet is wound and set though, the slowness of their rotation subdues the eccentricity. "When I first started out, I looked back at 200 years of watch history and asked myself, 'Is there anything that has never been invented?'" Zhang says. Joseph B. Powell, Ph.D., is the Principal of ChemePD, an advisory firm that works with the energy, chemicals and process development industries.

In-Depth If You're Into Technical Watchmaking, This Escapement Will Melt Your Mind

The aluminum globe itself is domed, its continents are in a silver tone with realistic topographic details, and its oceans are in a tastefully deep matte blue. We tested the first Chinese timepiece to win a prestigious Swiss award. CIGA Design notes environmentally friendly packaging on its website.

Ken has had several executive business roles in start-ups, and has experience in raising investment capital and securing Alpha customer deals. Early in his career, he held various sales and sales management positions at VLSI and Advanced Micro Devices. Further, the watch comes fitted with a single-link ceramic strap. It’s incredibly comfortable, although I might have liked just a little more texture on the bracelet over it’s more glossy appearance. Since it’s ceramic, the single-link makes sense to keep the cost down and provide some extra value, and there isn’t anything wrong with it. It’s lovely, and the added value of having a ceramic bracelet is undeniable, but I found myself wearing the rubber strap more often.

This allows for both keepers to float freely if one wishes, another unique design consideration. And that’s exactly the point of the watch, a message that speaks in shapes and colours instead of words. Like a note written on the back of your hand to remind you to take the rubbish out, the CIGA Design sits on your wrist and reminds you to put the banana peel in the organic waste and not the general. It may be a small reminder for a small action, but that’s usually the way big things start. Zhang wanted to create a product where the design was directly connected to a person's individuality and sense of self. After a few years of experimentation, he started working on watches, and in 2012, he established CIGA (an acronym for China International Great Art) Design.

Hands-On Review: The CIGA Design Blue Planet

This, along with the Ciga Blue Planet’s simply striking design and execution, makes it a watch worth taking note of — and a conversation piece should you pick one up. While I wouldn’t wear it every day, it’s certainly an object I can appreciate —and even wear from time to time. It’s a conversation topic for that reason (and those mentioned above), but for my tastes, it felt a bit over-the-top at times.

Hands-On The Aquascaphe Titanium Is Baltic's Most Modern Watch Yet

Not content simply calling it a day after creating a gorgeous dial with a novel time display, CIGA Design utilized a rarely seen case design as well. It’s a design that completes the watch’s cohesive look and contributed to the Blue Planet receiving 17 international design awards. Eschewing the traditional rounded case and protuberant lugs of most watch designs, the Blue Planet features an organic, sleek case that calls to mind the smoothness of a river stone. The 15mm-thick profile is maintained by a perfectly curved domed sapphire crystal, which adds subtle reflection and protects the dial, just like the Earth’s atmosphere. The quick-release fluorine rubber strap makes the case’s 46mmx46mm dimensions wear shockingly well, while the lugless design furthers the comfort by creating a much shorter effective lug-to-lug.

Let’s start with the case, because it sets the stage for how well the rest of the watch comes together. Measuring 46mm x 15mm in Titanium, the case itself is an almost UFO-esque shape. It’s a perfect circle, which would normally make the measurements a bit daunting but it truly wears differently than any “oversized” watch I’ve ever worn.

There’s technical interest behind its unique looks

The decorations are basic but pleasing, and the view on them is somewhat obstructed by printing on the transparent insert in the case back that celebrates the win of the Blue Planet at the GPHG. Running at 4Hz/28,800 VpH and offering a 40-hour power reserve, it is on par with the Swiss competition. The numbers in terms of accuracy that CIGA Design does communicate is between -20/+40 seconds per day. Most likely, its actual performance is in a much narrower range, as the motions of your wrist also affect this. Due to the way that the Blue Planet – Gilding Edition tells time, and the fact that it lacks a seconds hand, make it unlikely that you notice a significant deviation in time.

The Battle for the World’s Thinnest Watches (incl. Video)

Prior to that, Dr. Powell spent over 30 years of his career working with Shell. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and was Shell’s Chief Scientist - Chemical Engineering for several years. In 1988 he joined the Process Development Department at Shell, where he led R&D programs in new chemical processes, biofuels, and enhanced oil recovery.

The back has a few more actual pages detailing the specifications and operating instructions for the watch. Overall, the experience of receiving the watch in this context only added to the “story” that CIGA Design is trying to tell with the Blue Planet. And so, since 2012, CIGA Design has slowly been warming a growing audience to more and more outlandish designs, subtly introducing concepts—even with the packaging—that sow the seeds of something bigger.

He holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Rice University and a PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara. As usual, securing the clasp with one hand requires both coordination and practice, best performed over a bed or other soft surface. Speaking of durability, it’s water resistant to 30mm/3 ATM, suitable for incidental water exposure (e.g., washing hands or light rain). Those of us living in the Western Hemisphere are not accustomed to the view, especially when it’s upside down or sideways (the globe rotates). Call me continental plate-centric, but looking at that part of the world doesn’t do it for me, regardless of its orientation.
