Despite never really explaining what that legacy might be, the show uses it as fuel for the feud between Doug and Claire. Every decision made has to do with either cementing or tearing down Frank’s legacy, and it’s so difficult to care about any of it. But this is the case with so much of the final season, where various subplots and storylines do little to add anything meaningful to what should be the story of Claire as President. It’s a lackluster conclusion to a story that might have been a powerful way to frame a final season. Why Claire Underwood Couldn’t Save House of Cards
While you can go to the drive-in, the trailer is not there. The Gamble House in Pasadena is one of my favorite homes to visit. It is filled with fascinating details and a tour is well worth your time. I recommend visiting The Gamble House to admire the architecture and history as much as I recommend visiting it as a filming location.
The raw idea that Claire has to somehow break the patriarchy’s back to have any chance at success isn’t a bad idea to build the final season around. It’s almost a fascinating dissection of pop feminism, of the idea that something is feminist solely because it centers on a “strong woman,” no matter what other values it peddles. If we were discussing what single major issue adversely impacted this final season of House of Cards the most — and boy is there a lot to choose from — the decision to center so much of the story on Frank Underwood would have to be in the conversation. When allegations of sexual misconduct against Kevin Spacey saw him removed from the show, the writers had to quickly pivot away from their original final season arc that would have seen Frank and Claire battling for power. That’s no easy task, and choosing to kill Frank off screen makes a lot of sense.
The society that runs it certainly wants us to think so—haunted house tours and a popular interactive play capitalize on the 1929 scandal in which the owner of the mansion, oil heir Ned Doheny, died in a mysterious murder-suicide with his boyhood friend and employee. Doheny’s father was mired in the Teacup Dome Scandal at the time, and the deaths meant that he was excused from testifying; rumors also abounded that Ned, who was married with children, was trying to cover up a same-sex affair. Either way, a tour of this 55-room Tudor estate is a good way to get a glimpse into the lives of LA’s historical 1%—costly slate clads the façade and walkways, the windows are leaded glass and guests were entertained in the bowling alley and two movie theaters.
Fern was rumored to join the cast earlier as a potential love interest for Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood before the star’s own proverbial house of cards collapsed. However, other than the role’s “modified” regular status, no other details have been revealed about Fern’s character. Thus, it will be interesting to see if the previously rumored dynamic sticks, only minus Frank, obviously. It throws everything it can think of into the audience’s field of vision because it seems terrified to simply tell a story about the fates of the few established characters it has left. And maybe that’s because House of Cards always wanted its final season to be about...
